Any good real estate agent should have a website. Selecting the domain name is the first step to getting a real estate website. The domain name you select will be a very important aspect in branding and and in search engine optimization. Here are a few things to consider in regards to the domain you will choose.

The first thing you need to think about is what you wan’t your website to accomplish. Decide if you want your website be to provide more information about your services, or to give you search engine traffic. If your website will be used by people in your sphere of influence, who already know you, then use your name as the domain name to powerfully brand yourself. If the purpose of your website will be to bring you new business, the get a domain that includes the keywords people type in the search engines. One thing to note is that it actually takes a lot of time to get traffic through organic Google searches. If you can tolerate hundreds of hours blogging and social networking, then you will be able to get a keyword rich domain name to rank high in the search engines. If you know you won’t be able to spend the time doing online optimization, then a domain name branding you will be best.

If you decide your website focus will be to brand yourself, then follow these guidelines.

1. Make sure your domain name is memorable. Nearly all of the visitors to your website will be from your offsite marketing. You want people to be able to remember what your website is so that when they think about real estate, they will type your website in the URL bar. If your potential client doesn’t remember your website name when they go online to look for homes, then they will simply find another website.
2. Get a .com domain. .com sites are far more common than .info, .biz, or .net. As the standard domain, people will subconsiously type in .com in the URL bar, whether your website is a .net, .info, or .biz. If it’s available, buy YourFirstNameLastName.com. If not try a domain like YourNameRealEstate.com or YourNameRealEstate.com. You in all probability won’t be able to get your very first choice when looking for a .com, but it will be well worth it.
3. Don’t buy a domain name that has hyphens or dashes. Domains with hyphens and dashes are not memorable. People will rarely remember the difference between hypens and dashes. After a few unsuccessful attempts of trying to type your domain in, your future clients will give up, and find a different real estate side to satisfy their needs.
If you wan’t your website to bring you new traffic from people you don’t yet know, then get a keyword rich area specific website. An exact keyword domain is one of the most beneficial factors in getting ranked in the search engines.Once again, hyphens and dashes shouldn’t be used in your domain name, and .com domains will bring you more visitors. If you are a real estate agent covering Potomac Maryland, consider a domain that has the keywords  Potomac MD Real Estate .com. If your goal was to rank well for a term like Fayetteville Arkansas Homes for sale, consider a domain that includes those keywords. RealEstateBrighamCity.com is an excellent domain name for someone who wants to attract visitors searching for Brigham City Real Estate. Having a good website name is very valuable. It will greatly impact the effectiveness of your real estate website.
